About the Craft

What is Ajrakh?
Ajrakh is a centuries-old block-printing tradition from Kachchh and Sindh. It uses hand-carved wooden blocks, natural dyes like indigo and madder, and a 16-step process that takes 16 to 18 days per piece. No two pieces are identical.

Are your dyes really natural?
Yes. We use indigo (from the indigofera plant), madder root (for reds), and pomegranate rind (for yellows). No azo dyes, no synthetics. This is also why slight colour variation between pieces is normal and expected.

What is Bandhani?
Bandhani is a tie-dye technique from Gujarat and Rajasthan where tiny portions of fabric are tied with thread before dyeing, creating intricate dot patterns. A single dupatta can have thousands of individual ties, each done by hand.

What is Suzani?
Suzani is a hand-embroidered textile tradition from Central Asia, practiced by artisan communities in India as well. Large, bold floral and geometric motifs are stitched onto cotton or silk base fabric, often by multiple women working together.

Are these pieces made in a factory?
No. Every piece is made by hand, by individual artisan families or small workshops. We visit each maker in person before commissioning work from them.

Why do two pieces of the same design look slightly different?
Because they are made by hand. Block alignment, dye absorption, and fabric texture vary naturally. This is not a defect. It is proof of the process.

Sizing and Fit

How do I know what size to order?
Each product page has a size guide with measurements in centimetres. When in doubt, go one size up for a relaxed fit or message us on WhatsApp with your measurements and we will advise.

Do your pieces run true to size?
Most of our pieces are relaxed or semi-relaxed in fit. Handloom cotton also has a natural give that synthetic fabrics do not. Check the size guide on each product page for specifics.

Can I request a custom size?
Yes, for select pieces. See the Custom Orders section below or message us directly.

Custom Orders

Do you take custom orders?
Yes, for select pieces and in limited quantities. Custom orders typically take 3 to 6 weeks depending on the craft and artisan availability.

What can be customised?
Size, colour palette (within what the natural dye process allows), and in some cases, the print or embroidery design. WhatsApp us to discuss what is possible for a specific piece.

Are custom orders refundable?
No. Custom orders are made specifically for you and cannot be returned or exchanged.

Care

How do I wash my Gul piece?
Hand wash in cold water with a mild detergent. Do not machine wash, wring, bleach, or dry in direct sunlight. Full care instructions are on our Care Guide page.

Will the colour fade?
Natural dyes soften over time with washing, which is different from fading. With proper care, the colour deepens and develops a beautiful patina. Avoid direct sunlight when drying to preserve colour longest.

Is some colour bleeding in the first wash normal?
Yes. A small amount of indigo bleeding in the first one or two washes is completely normal and stops on its own. Wash separately the first time if you prefer.
